RaceGorilla provides race organizers with accurate and reliable timing solutions, especially in sports where precision matters most. Yet, paddle sports—such as canoe slalom and kayak racing—present unique challenges. Often, traditional timing systems register false triggers when a paddle or the bow of a boat crosses the beam before the athlete does. As a result, this can lead to inaccurate results.

Built for the elements

To solve this issue, we’ve developed custom infrared photocells specifically designed for paddle sports. In particular, these photocells feature a specialized filter that ignores the paddle and bow, triggering only when the athlete’s body crosses the finish line. This innovation ensures more accurate results and reduces timing discrepancies.

Moreover, we’ve constructed the hardware to withstand harsh outdoor conditions. Encased in durable, waterproof housings, the photocells are built to endure rocky riverbanks, splashing water, and unpredictable weather. Setting up the system is straightforward, thanks to seamless integration with the RaceGorilla BlueBox.

How it works:

• Transmitter: Place the transmitter on the far side of the river or course. It emits a wide beam covering up to 50 meters and operates on a lithium battery with a 24-hour lifespan.
• Receiver: Position the receiver on the finish side and connect it to the BlueBox. The receiver operates in two modes:
  • Start Mode: Activated by pressing a button on the BlueBox, it emits a series of four short beeps followed by one long beep, signaling the athlete to start.
  • Finish Mode: Remains continuously active to detect when an athlete crosses the finish line

While the receiver includes a built-in beeper, connecting an external beeper is recommended for louder and clearer audio cue

Seamless Integration with the RaceGorilla App

After setting up the hardware, connect the BlueBox to the RaceGorilla Competition app on your smartphone. This connection transmits data in real time, ensuring the system records start and finish times accurately and makes them instantly available. The RaceGorilla dashboard displays live results, giving athletes and organizers immediate feedback.
