Covid-19 has had an enormous impact on everyone. Besides the personal health issues and tragedies around the world, the sports industry has been hit hard. At RaceGorilla too, we saw that the use of our software came to a sudden halt.
At this moment we are learning more and more about how to organize a Covid-19 proof competition. RaceGorilla has some strong points that could help you organizing your event in a Corona proof way.
Ideal software for micro events
RaceGorilla is designed for small competitions, you could call them micro events. There is no economic need to have a lot of participants. Our pricing starts at €39 for competition. So even a club race of just 20 participants is affordable. See our pricing page for more details. As our software is user-friendly and does not require any special hardware, you can set up a race with live results within just few minutes.
Having said that, there is no technical limit to the number of participants, 200 or 300 participants should be no problem at all. It’s just a matter of having the right people at the right place. We would really like you to organize a Covid-19 proof competition, not only because we need it to survive, but also to have more people enjoying their sport again.
Start individual, in groups, waves or categories
As there is no need for special timing equipment, volunteers at the start can use their own -Corona free- smartphone for timing at start, intermediate points and finish. Timing is done by hand and visual identification of the bib numbers. 1,5 meters distance to the participants is no problem at all.
- The easiest way of course is to start individually. In a classic time trial start its no problem to keep distance. There is no need to have a fixed start interval, as the starter hits the start button. So there is never a need of a hurry. Just make sure the participants line up in the order from the start list.
- Double Time Trial: If you have a lot of participants, then it might be a good idea to start in couples. Make sure to line up in two lanes, for example one for the odd and one for the even numbers. The starter can select 2 participants and start them at the same time.
- This could be made easier if, for example, the odd and even numbers are divided into 2 start groups (using the start wave functionality). In that way two starters can work together simultaneously which gives more flexibility.
- If you know how to make start waves, you could also create any size of start group to have a mini-mass start. Just follow the advise of your local government as to what group size starting is possible.
Volunteers use their own smartphone for timing
RaceGorilla handles virtually any kind of start system. There are several options to keep distance for the participants and really have a Covid-19 proof competition.
No timing chips needed
Chips could be a source of Covid-19 contamination. Especially with the reusable and rental chips, there is a lot of manual handling involved. Apart from the costs and number of volunteers involved in the distribution process, it is a lot simpler when just using bib-numbers.
Finish on multiple devices
As RaceGorilla is entirely cloud based. It is possible to have multiple finishers working together. Create 2 or more finish lanes and let each timer finish one lane using the keypad entry finish screen.
Live results online
As all the results are available live and online immedeately, each participant can have a look at them at their own smartphone again. No need to wait or hand out paper results. Just keep it simple!
No paper score forms needed
No paper administration for judging is needed during slalom events. Volunteers can use their own safe mobile device and send scores to the server immediately. Of course the gate judges can or should use a paper administration for inquiries for themselves, but there is no need to hand them over to the organizer with the risk of spreading the virus.
Start right now!
As you can see, there are a lot of ways that can lead to a good an safe competition. We would like you to try it out for yourself. Go to the dashboard and create a competition. In demo mode, we offer full functionality only limited to 10 participants for free.
