Stand up paddling (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sport in the world. SUP is mostly done as a recreational sport, but some people prefer to race. For races RaceGorilla is an excellent timing solution, as it is cheap and offers a great way to improve the race experience for everyone: competitors, supporters, audience, organisation, volunteers and sponsors. RaceGorilla offers real time and detailed results as easy and affordable as possible. As a race organiser, you just need a couple of volunteers with their mobile (smartphone) to have a great race.
Stand up paddling (SUP) as a race sport
As SUP is a young sport, there is still a lot of development going on. Boards, paddling and race circuits are changing all the time. Most races are held as a mass start event at the moment. For RaceGorilla this is one of the race settings available, next to the time trial mode and the group starts. Mostly the difference is in the way the paddlers are finishing. When larger groups are finishing at the same time, it might be useful to have multiple mobile devices available at the finish line. This is just one of the great features of RaceGorilla, as it is fully cloud based, you can have multiple devices working simultaneously at split- or finish points, and still have all results updated in real time. With RaceGorilla, having multiple split timing points is not a problem either, you can have as many split points as you wish, as long as you have volunteers and smartphones available.
Mass start format for SUP races
Most SUP races, use the a mass start format. All competitors start at once or in groups.
A simple race only has a start and a finish. To give more insights of the race to the supporters, just add a number of split points.
For a quick test just use the standard format available in RaceGorilla.
The simple default race for a tower running event has a start and a finish, and a category of men and women. If you want to set up a race with more splits or more categories, use the RaceGorilla dashboard to set up a race entirely to you demands.
