Extreme slalom and BoaterX using RaceGorilla

With the RaceGorilla app, organising a race is as easy as possible.  whether you have an individual, group- or mass start, this app is ready to handle the most extreme canoe cross races. In canoe cross, or mostly called BoaterX or extreme slalom, the start and finish are typically a few hundred meters apart.  Sometimes the boaterx or canoe cross, is held on an artificial slalom course, but the sport was invented at some really extreme sections of whitewater. Both the timing and gate judging can be handled by RaceGorilla as the penalty scoring is adjustable to any race type. The sport is fairly new in the family of paddle sports, but got getting very popular in a short time.

Characteristics of boaterx

Canoe Cross races have individual starts to begin with and later groups of 3 or 4 paddlers are formed. Sometimes mass starts or group starts are held. Both men and women are paddling the same course. As it is a fairly new sport, the rules are often set for a specific race. Sometimes extra challenges are implemented such as rolling sections or artificial obstacles.

As there are multiple paddlers on course, it sometimes hard to tell who’s goig to finish first. The finisher can handle close finish situations without a problem. It is easy to swap finish times in the app before the are published.

Times are displayed in 1/100 of a second. As the race progresses to semifinals and finals, the time is not so important as the ranking defines who is going to the next round. Hand timing is often enough to see who is fastest and get the choice of the best start position in the final.

To check all scores and to handle protest and inquiries, an online dashboard is available for the race management. Changes can be made by the race management, even after the app closes the race or run. To manage the race, volunteers and the devices used, several levels of access are possible.Split times are sometimes used and it is possible. In some cases it is a good idea to use a split timing point to train a new timer or to be used by the speaker to update the audience on site. To keep the race organisation simple, just use one smartphone at the start and one at the finish. If there are enough volunteers and devices, it t good to have some extra split times taken.

Time trial formats for boaterX

Most boaterX races, use the time trial format. In a time trial each competitor can be started individually, in pairs or in small groups.
A simple race only has a start and a finish. To give more insights of the race to the supporters, just add a number of split points.
For a quick test just use the standard format available in RaceGorilla.
The simple default race for a boaterX event has a start and a finish, and a category of men and women. If you want to set up a race with more splits or more categories, use the RaceGorilla dashboard to set up a race entirely to you demands. Just like in slalom, there can be judging section as well, for example when the race is organised more like an extreme slalom.
